Track Record

  • Directed merger of Command and Control Systems and Sonar Systems Businesses of Ultra Electronics into CSS, reducing headcount by 100 and stabilising a number of problem contracts.

  • Oversaw introduction of a single ERP system across the new CSS organisation in just 10 months, reducing headcount.

  • Recruited completely new management team to create ‘one team culture’ across three sites and improve accountability. Two individuals selected for Group Leadership programme.

  • Through appointment of a new Commercial Director, successfully resolved a number of long standing and inherited commercial and contractual issues with UK and international customers.

  • Through appointment of an Engineering Director developed a matrixed engineering team structure, operating across three sites, that became adopted elsewhere in Ultra.

  • Achieved bonus targets for the combined business in 2018 thro’ 2020;

  • Secured ASW sonar export opportunities in India worth £100M+ over 3 years and achieved selection for an ASW sonar for a European navy which will generate significant business growth.

  • Drove up operating margins from <10% to over 17% through empowerment of key individuals and efficiencies introduced by new ERP system, adjusting mind set and by effective market price testing

  • Drove up staff engagement score by 9 points in 12 months through addressing feedback on communications, mentoring and career opportunities particular.

Managing Director of UK based autonomous organisation trading as part of Ultra Electronics Holdings PLC (ULE). Organisationally, CSS reports via the Maritime Division, has a turnover of c£65M and employs 370 staff across three sites. The Business operates with 170 qualified engineers in the Underwater Warfare, Maritime, Land and C2ISR market segments. Specialist areas include anti-submarine sonar systems, naval combat systems, torpedo defence systems, air launched anti-submarine warfare (ASW) sonobuoys; with a significant after market in logistics and technical support, spares and repairs of naval electronic systems. Standalone business leader with additional responsibility for Commercial IT, Finance, HR, QA, Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management functions.
